Severian ate his meal slowly, listening to the rest of AIS one, how they interacted, what they talked about.

When Merv was done, Severian replied with a laugh, laden with sarcasm "Training? in the Inquisition guard? If only that had occurred to someone before deploying us wholesale to Arose. Closest thing we had to training was our first deployment, and even that ended up in a mess. Got the job done tho. More training is what we need, and not a culling in the field. That's the thing about training, it does more than root out the weeds, like the culling of Arose. It offers opportunity for even the weeds to discover their strength, and a way for them to serve the Emperor. We all serve, and even the humble adminisrtatam clerc contributes to the running of the Imperiam. Humanity can only thrive when it thrives together. That is what the imbeciles in the KSO can't seem to fathom. Capable as they may be, and i do not doubt their skill for i met my own equal on Arose before dropping a strafing run on her, that simple incomprehension is their doom.

Humanity fights together, as one, that is why we thrive. Even hear, each team is different. Each one lacking in some way another masters. That is why together, AIS1 is strong." Severian ended his lecture with a genuine smile "A strength we look forward to bolstering!"

When Severian offered to get her meal for her, Castella let out a relieved little sigh and nodded gratefully, despite the "stumps" nickname. "Appreciated, Sev." She then couldn't resist a teasing grin. "Knew I kept your skinny ass around for a reason."

As they all ate, Castella was working on a particularly chewy mouthful of food when Merv tried to start up the conversation again. It was probably just as well that Cas couldn't reply immediately. Instead, while she was still hastily chewing, Severian spoke up and said pretty much what she'd been thinking - except far more tactfully and eloquently, and without anywhere near as much heated, biting sarcasm or swearing as Cas would have injected into it.

So instead of tearing into Merv, Cas just kept quiet and continued to focus on eating for now.

Caradoc bit his tongue as Team Blackout barged past him. He had expected a little more courtesy than a simple thanks however he had probably expected too much from individuals who seemed to have dwelt in the lower reaches of society. Nevertheless, the tally had been evened out and his transgression against them had been repaid. Now what to do for the rest of AIS1...

By the time that Caradoc had retrieved his food and sat back down with the rest of his team, Mervyn had already launched into another story about training. He listened to what he had to say and was about to respond when Severian chimed in. He nodded in agreement as Severian's words rang true in his mind and brought up some rather uncomfortable memories of Arose. A small amount of bile began to rise up his throat and Caradoc pushed away his tray as his appetite abandoned him.

Instead, Caradoc glanced around at the other tables. The rest of AIS1 seemed to be as diverse as Team Blackout in their attire and mannerisms and there seemed to be no order or structure to anything. It was as Mervyn said, each team was autonomous in how it functioned. Except, of course, for Captain Morroe who ate quietly at his own table separate to the rest of the unit.

Caradoc was not in much of a mood for talking or eating and began to think of ways that he could make it up to the rest of AIS1. Apparently his personal sins against Lieutenant Morning had been magnified and applied against all of AIS1. A petty and distasteful act if Caradoc had ever seen one. Regardless, Caradoc was certain that he could redeem himself in the eyes of his compatriots and the close members of his team. To be hated was to be aspired to, however hatred had to be earned and warranted, not given as a petty schola insult. What Morning had done was far beyond what was acceptable. She would be educated in due time and in a manner that would only punish his actions and no one else. That he promised.

Until then though, Mervyn and Severian yammered back and forth while Caradoc quietly listened to the general noise of the dining room. AIS1 was certainly quite loud.
