Historical
Cesdradin Empire (The Mighty Slave Empire)

After the Fall of the Old Kingdoms, the world of man saw the rise of two powerful Empires. One of which was Cesdradin. Cesdradin's lands were comprised of what are now known as the Kingdoms of Dyrinin, Ghenrael and Ekkelie and was ruled from the Capital Chiron, high in the mountains now known as the Cesdradin Heights.

The Ruling house was Ga'dala and beneth them were the Masters (the equivalent of lords and ladies). The Ga'dala were powerful beyond wealth, military and economy. The Ga'dala bloodline was also consistent in conceiving attuned children, who were taught to literally impose their will upon others, both man an beast.

The empire eventually fell when its slaves rose up against the Masters following their leader Lucien Daverax, First of his name and First King of the Ghenrael. After the Kingdom fell, the slave army or as they called themselves 'the unshackled', fragmented and erected the New Kingdoms, Dyrinin (in the west), Ghenrael (in the East) and Ekkelie (in the south).

Eros Empire (Birth place of Philosophy)
Eros was the long prosperous Empire comprised of the lands now known as Revelia, Florin, and Araventis. Eros existed during the time of the Old Kingdoms and much of what is known about them as well as any artifacts held from its time are treasured here in Eros.

Eros was not without its conflicts however, Often warring with the Barbarian Raiders of the north (known today as the Galts), The Orcs of the west and the Ache in the harsh south. For a time they were able to repel their invaders but time and corruption from within eventually brought the long lived empire to its knees, allowing the enemies to take advantage of weakness.

In its time Eros introduced the Philosophy, Democracy, and before the end equality by law and trial by jury. The fall of Eros saw the rise of three Kingdoms. Revelia (in the north), Florin in the South and Araventis (in the East).

Ulfar (The Wild Lands)
The cold and brutal north was never tamed by the imperial definition, instead ruled by the innumerable warlords each with their own clan. Over the years the clans would fight each other for dominion over the north and for the wealth of their enemies.

As the decades past the clans merged, through blood and marriage, into the three ruling clans of the north, Themarions, Klarwens and the Borlvarn. These Clans, forged the age old tradition to keep peace among the clans called the Great Hunt. Each clan would choose the greatest of their warriors to travel north into the endless white to find and slay a great quarry. The warrior to return with proof of the greatest quarry would earn his clan the right to lead the raids south.

When the Old Kingdoms fell, the Vampire Lords of the West, the Duergar of the World Spine and the Beastmen of the north threatened Ulfar from all sides. That year the Themarions put forward the first woman to fight in The Great Hunt and she lead the raids west to Trilogy gates where the Ulfen fought against the evils that threatened their lands. The Ulfen named her the Queen of the north and from that time on, the Great Hunt would only be held upon the death of the Ulfen Sovereign so that another true warrior of the north would rise to rule. By Ulfen law, each Clan would have dominion over their given land and those lands saw the rise of the Ulfen Kingdoms Thedimar (in the West), Klarweth (in the north) and Borlvar (in the east).

Continent: Lethron

The Nine Realms of Lethron

Ghenrael (Center of the World)
The rugged and bountiful highlands of Ghenrael is streaked and dotted with fresh water rivers, lakes and expansive great wood forests. Ghenrael is the most central Kingdom in the realms of man and as a result, boasts the huge and lucrative trade market.

The Ghenraen culture holds three things in contempt: Slavery, Poverty and the unmasked face. As the Ghenraen people are descendant of the slaves of Cesdradin, it is obvious why its culture abhors slavery. However, by extension the Ghenraen people culturally disapprove of poverty. For this reason, the Ghenraen culture has developed two major practices. Firstly, Ghenraens dress extravagantly. The way one dresses quantifies their wealth, importance and most importantly, that they are above poverty. Secondly, to avoid poverty and by extension pursue wealth and power, all Ghenraen's engage in kingdom politics or as it is better known among its people as 'the Grand Game'. Finally, the masked face is a continued practice from the time of the Cesdardin Empire, where slaves were forced to wear masks. It is viewed as indecent and garish for one to be bare faced in public and to do so in the presence of nobility is a punishable offence. Beyond these central cultural pillars, Ghenraens practice a live and let live approach to life.

(GM Note: Ghenrael is loosely based on the Dutch/Polish/French cultures refined by the Orlisians presented in the Dragon Age IP)

Ghenraens:

Dyrinin (Fractures of Faith)
The golden plains of Dyrinin are vast lands where the unshackled saw the ascendance of the Ardents, Daverax, Aysel and Khalil, who ultimately over threw the Ga'dala of the Cesdradin Empire. After the fall of Cesdradin, Aysel the Prophet and Khalil of Dawn returned to the holy lands with their followers. Here upon the golden plains the two built the Sacred City of Eresin at the fork of the River Hyashid.

Soon the two Ardents began to teach the way of the Ascended path, but their teachings varied. While alive, this meant little to their followers and the prosperity of the land. However, the Ardents eventually died and the land slowly divided as a result of the Ascendant Teachings. The war of two paths eventually broke out between the Ayseln in the south and the Khalah in the North, which ended in a bloody siege over the holy City Eresin.

With the the Khalah in Eresin, Dyrinin became dominated by the Ascendant teachings of Khalil of Dawn. As a result the Duranin have grown into a highly religious and superstitious people.Coupled with their History as slaves to the Cesdradin Empire, the Duranin are especially suspicious, and in some cases outright hate, Mages and those who use the magical arts. This is particularly apparent among the more rural settlements of Dyrinin, where locals have been known to burn Mages (or suspected mages) innocent or not, at the stake. In fact the only acceptable practice of Aether art in Dyrinin is Alchemy.

Duranin:

Ekkelie (Seat of Knowledge)
The Kingdom of Ekkelie was founded by explorers of from the surrounding Kingdom's, Dyrinin, Ghenrael and Florin. These lands for the longest time was the Age of Kings' frontier, where explorers and merchants came to seek fame and fortune. In the early days of exploration many notable towns and trade settlements were built across Ekkelie, though none were more prosperous than Palttila.

As these towns and settlements grew, their owning benefactor's rose to power, becoming known as the Trade Lords of Ekkelie. The most powerful among them was the Trade Lord of Palttila, until his expansion provoked the Dracanoids of Storsden Dales. The Dracanoids stuck Palttila with devastating force and ferocity, without warning. Slaughtering near all of its populous. In response the Trade Lords drafted the Palttila Treaty and united the people of Ekkelie against the Dracanoids. The war against the draconic savages was never definitively won by either side, rather the Storsden Dracanoids retreated to Palttila and the Trade lords were content to make the Fallen city the board between man and beast.

Over the Years, Ekklie flourished under the Palttila Treaty becoming a Kingdom in its own right. Each of the Trade Lords took the title Minister and their counsel would elect a Prime Minister to run the Ekkelie. This counsel of Ministers would discuss the laws of the land and the Kingdom's affair's before arriving at a course of action, if one was necessary. The counsel would always be comprised of eight seats. Five for the Leaders of the Major settlements and three for the independents, representatives of the people. If a seat were ever to become vacant, the counsel would vet a number of potential candidates and select a new Minister. In the case the vacancy belonged to a Settlement Leader, this would usually fall to the next most recognized Merchant Lord of the settlement or the Minister's chosen successor. However, if it was the chair belonged to an independent, the counsel would be forced to look to the people to find a new representative.

As a result of their Kingdom's governing structure, Ekkelie has become more focused on industry, knowledge and economics. While religion and there arts are certainly prevalent within these lands, Ekkelie places less emphisis on its importance when it comes to the functionality and prosperity of its kingdom.

Revelia (The New Empire)

Florin (Beset by Anarchy)

Araventis (Bounty of Lethron)

Thedimar (Throne of the North)

Klarweth (The North Green)

Borlvar (The North Shield)

Out of curiosity, how does the Ghenrean tradition of masking faces work with non-humans and travellers? If Ghenreans tend to treat everyone that don't wear masks as being garish or rude, do they also tend to be rude to all other people, such as foreigners and non-humans, that don't wear masks as a matter of course?

On a side note, I can't remember exactly but were the cities of Staghelm and Arashaire located in Ekkelie or do those places no longer exist in the world of LoD?

Ghenraen's do recognize that Travelers and other races don't share the same cultural practice (wearing masks) and don't require foreigners by law to ware them. However, as a culture it does impact on how you are treated. It hasn't been that much of an issue for you guys yet as you've primarily been dealing with military and with people who practice a welcoming level of cultural awareness. The only time it might have been an issue is in Daelin, when you were purchasing Josline, but you had Zacariah with you doing the talking.

That said, i hadn't solidified many cultural things yet until now. So there will be things to properly indicate these cultural habits from now on as i confirm more lore.

Also, Staghelm and Arashaire still exist. They are both in Ekkelie still, though Staghelm will need a name change to fit the new cultural theme. But everything from my old games will exist to some extent. They might get some small alterations for theme and cultural reason but otherwise itll all be there.
